Sandy qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Thomson McLintock (now part of KPMG) in the 1970s prior to starting his legal career with Thorntons in 1980; where he specialised in Private Client work, and is now a consultant, having been a partner for many years. He has served the firm in many capacities over the years, including a spell as Head of the Private Client Department. Sandy has been a member of STEP since 1991 and was the first Chairman of the Scottish Branch. He was also a member of the Advisory Group on Trust Law to the Scottish Law Commission, and is an accredited Trust Specialist with the Law Society of Scotland. He tutored in the Private Client Course in the Postgraduate Diploma of Legal Practice at the University of Dundee for a number of years, and also still delivers occasional lectures to the profession/STEP.
