STEP Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising



Practical skills for practitioners working in a family enterprise.

The STEP Advanced Certificate in Family Business Advising is a specialist qualification covering all aspects of family business systems, from the first meeting with the client, setting agendas and planning, to structuring the business and identifying and managing issues within the family. The course will provide an understanding of both simple family enterprises as well as more complex multigenerational families. Through completion of the course advisors will develop mix of competencies required to offer an effective and wide-ranging service to the family business.

This four month blended learning programme is aimed at anyone working, or wishing to work, with a family enterprise from within the bounds of their own profession of origin, whether they are a lawyer, an accountant, a financial planner, private banker, wealth manager, family office executive, or member of a multi-disciplinary team. This Advanced Certificate would also be relevant for family business members.

This Course is:
  • Practical and relevant to the tasks that you are undertaking in the workplace.
  • Designed to allow you to apply your learning to practice in real time, as the course progresses.
  • Taught with high quality training materials that are relevant and student-friendly.
  • Delivered by industry-experienced international presenters with particular knowledge of the difficulties facing large family businesses.

Successful completion of the course will enable you, or your firm, to:
  • Develop your understanding of the complexities of the family enterprise context.
  • Apply a range of proven tools to help the family enterprise achieve its objectives.
  • Demonstrate the skills and knowledge expected of a competent family enterprise advisor operating within the bounds of your own profession.
  • Introduce or enhance a family enterprise specialism.
  • Identify business opportunities, local or international, in what is currently an immature market.
  • Access a wider business and professional community of practice.
  • Become an Affiliate of STEP.

On enrolment, you will receive distance learning materials, including a bespoke course manual, and access to an online introductory webinar. Tuition from an expert in the family business field will be provided at a one and half-day workshop. The formal assessment is by way of a 3500 word written assignment.
